Flower arranging is more than just placing flowers in a vase. It’s about creating a composition that is visually balanced, emotionally impactful, and designed with love. Here are some tips from Shirley, our founder with over 18 years of floristry experience, to help you arrange flowers like a pro.
1. Start with the Right Flowers
Before you start arranging, make sure you choose the right flowers for the occasion. Think about the colors and size of your arrangement. Choose flowers that complement each other in both color and texture. It’s important to mix different shapes and sizes—round flowers like roses work well with tall flowers like lilies or irises.
2. Consider the Focal Point
Every floral arrangement should have a focal point—the main flower or section that draws the eye. This is usually the largest or most striking flower in the bouquet. To create a balanced look, arrange your flowers so that the focal point is visible from every angle.
3. Use Different Heights
When arranging flowers, varying the height of your stems creates depth and interest. Start with the tallest flowers in the center and gradually arrange shorter flowers around them. This layered effect makes the bouquet look more natural and visually appealing.
4. Play with Color Combinations
Color is key when arranging flowers. Try pairing contrasting colors for a bold look or similar hues for a softer effect. Complementary colors, like purple and yellow, create a striking effect, while analogous colors, like pink and red, make for a harmonious, soothing arrangement.
5. Don’t Overcrowd the Vase
Give your flowers space to breathe. Avoid overcrowding the vase with too many blooms. Leave some room between the flowers so they can shine individually, while still being part of a cohesive arrangement. This will give your flowers a natural, elegant feel.
